Electric drip coffee makers were not commercially successful until the early seventies, but were invented before that, as many great ideas such as this are simply ahead of their time. Before one of the bigger brands made the drip coffee maker the huge success that it is today, other methods of making coffee included vacuum brewers, which were complicated, in that they heated water up in a lower chamber, until expansion caused the water to be pushed up into the grounds located in an upper chamber, and then forced back down again. There were also percolators which weren’t quite as complicated, in that they pushed heated water through a basket containing the grounds, and then back into the pot. The only problem with this was that the process had to be repeated a few times to get a good cup of coffee.

The benefits of having a drip coffee maker as opposed to a traditional one are many. One such benefit is that you get more flavor from your coffee, as well as more caffeine.
